Prominent contemporary Chinese artist Yun Gao, known for his work across numerous fields, including Chinese illustrated storybooks, will present a lecture and live demonstration of Chinese painting on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at William Paterson University in Wayne.
Part of the Distinguished Artist Series of the University’s Center for Chinese Art, the presentation, titled “In the Depth of the Clouds,” will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the University’s Power Art Center Art Gallery, located at 25 Power Avenue in Wayne. The event is free and open to the public.
A distinguished professor at Nanjing University, Yun Gao holds the title of National First-Class Artist in China. Currently, he is an expert on the National Thematic Art Creation Committee under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, a council member of the Chinese National Academy of Painting, and vice chairman of the Chinese Painting Committee. He also serves as president of the Jiangsu Province Chinese Painting Society. He is a graduate of the Chinese painting program at Nanjing University of the Arts.
He has held various prestigious roles, including vice director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture, president and editor-in-chief of the Jiangsu Fine Arts Publishing House, and director of the Jiangsu Art Museum. He has served as a judge for the National Fine Arts Exhibition.
Known for his talent across various fields, including lianhuanhua (Chinese illustrated storybooks), traditional Chinese painting, and stamp design, Yun Gao’s early career was marked by numerous national awards, solidifying his position as one of China's most representative artists. His notable work, Luo Lun Taking the Imperial Examination, won first prize at the 6th National Fine Arts Exhibition and is hailed as a masterpiece of 20th century Chinese baimiao (line-drawing) illustration.
