The 5th Annual Cyber Security and Big Data Analytics Symposium, focusing on today’s threats and crucial strategies for remediation, will be held at William Paterson University on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the University Commons Ballroom, on the campus in Wayne.
“This symposium offers critical information about cyber crime protection against ransomware, data theft, malware, and more, as well as strategies for remediation,” says Bernadette Tiernan, executive director of the School of Continuing and Professional Education at William Paterson.
“Cybersecurity challenges increase exponentially with the growth of big data,” says Kate Muldoon, regional director of the William Paterson University Small Business Development Center. “We want to help businesses, whatever their size, understand these pressing concerns and have a plan.”
Keynote speaker Rebecca Gott, IBM Distinguished Engineer, will talk about Blockchain and its potential impact on data security at 10 a.m. At 11 a.m., Brett Yaeger, supervisory special agent for the FBI Newark Division of Cyber Task Force, will present on the Dark Net and cybercrime.
A buffet lunch will served at 12 p.m. At 1 p.m., Michael Geraghty, chief information officer and first director of the New Jersey Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell (NJCCIC) will discuss “Ransomware,” outlining how ransomware works, why it is so prevalent, and how individuals and organizations can best protect themselves from ransomware infection.
At 1:45 p.m., “The Current State of Cyber Crime” will be presented by Theresa Misuraca, cyber threat intelligence analyst with NJCCIC for the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness. This presentation will discuss different types of profit-motivated cybercrimes targeting U.S. businesses, governments, and consumers. Trends in cybercrime, including ransomware, business email compromise, data theft, skimming devices, point-of-sale malware, malicious advertising, and other extortion tactics will be covered.
